The first climb begins after a few kilometres: it is a picturesque ascent that winds its way up a narrow valley, reaching the small church of Madonna del Sasso; after the church, the climb becomes steeper and leads you to the central part of the route, characterised by a long stretch of dirt road running halfway up the slope, offering breathtaking views of Monte Cucco and the Umbrian-Marche Apennines.
Once past this section, you’ll have to climb for a few more kilometres before tackling a fun single-track descent through a pine forest, which will lead you to the final challenging stretch of the route, the one leading to the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, where the Ceri from the famous festival are kept throughout the year.
From here, you begin your descent along the dirt track that is raced uphill during the Festa dei Ceri in May – a fascinating stretch offering a beautiful view of Gubbio below.
The dirt track ends just above the Ducal Palace and the Cathedral, from where you can head back down towards the centre of Gubbio, not forgetting a visit to the hanging gardens and a stroll along Corso Garibaldi before returning to the starting point.
