Montefalco is one of the region’s best-known villages. Thanks to its panoramic setting, it is known as the ‘balcony of Umbria’, but it is also famous for the fine Sagrantino wine produced on the very hills surrounding the village.
For cycling enthusiasts, however, it is also a spectacular starting point for many possible routes in central Umbria, with scenic, quiet roads and a virtually endless choice of routes of varying difficulty.
Here we suggest just one of many – a fairly short and easy route, as the only challenging section is the rideable climb from Torre di Montefalco back to Montefalco.
The first part of the route winds through the vineyards and is all downhill to Bruna. From here, head towards Trevi and Pissignano to reach the Clitunno Springs, which require a short detour but are well worth the effort. If you have the time and the energy, cycling up to the centre of Trevi is also an unmissable stop.
The return journey to Montefalco can be completed entirely on the Spoleto–Assisi cycle path along the Marroggia stream, as far as Torre di Montefalco. Here, you’ll need to leave the cycle path and join the SP444, which will take you back to your starting point in 5 kilometres. The climb is steady but never particularly challenging.
