Starting from the funicular parking area, as mentioned, go through the highway underpass and head toward Ciconia. At the first roundabout, continue toward Monte Peglia, and at kilometer 1.3, turn right toward Corbara. After a few ups and downs along the paved road until kilometer 5.5, turn left onto a well-maintained dirt road and begin the first real climb, along which you can enjoy beautiful views of Orvieto. The climb ends at kilometer 9.4; turn right and continue on a fast descent that ends at kilometer 13, where it meets the paved road. Turn left, pass the small village of Corbara, and continue straight along the lake for several kilometers.
Return to a dirt road at kilometer 19.3, turn left, and begin the route’s second climb, whose most challenging stretch is in the initial stretch but which leads you to the most beautiful and picturesque part of the itinerary, reaching the uninhabited village of Osa at kilometer 21. From here, continue slightly uphill through the woods, passing through truly unparalleled scenery.
At kilometer 26, you’ll return to the paved road: turn left. After about 3 kilometers, you’ll reach Colonnetta, where the descent begins. At kilometer 29.7, leave the paved road and take a fast dirt track that quickly leads you down into the valley. The descent is interspersed with a few short stretches of paved road and some short but challenging climbs. At certain points, you can see Orvieto and spot the silhouette of the Duomo on the horizon. Here, before returning to the starting point, a stop to admire the view is a must. Once the descent is over, you’ll return to the starting point in less than 2 kilometers by following the signs for Orvieto.
This route takes you through some of Umbria’s artistic and natural treasures. By choosing this itinerary, you’ll first discover the historic centre of Orvieto and perhaps the fascinating underground Orvieto, a veritable labyrinth of tunnels, galleries, cisterns, wells, quarries, and cellars. Secondly, you can appreciate Lake Corbara and its many natural wonders, including the Gole del Forello, where the Tiber winds its way between high travertine rock walls, creating stunning scenery. Finally, don’t miss the dense forests and the panoramic views from the hills of central Umbria, particularly from the slopes of Monte Peglia, where you can admire a magnificent view of the entire region.
