A circular route dedicated to discovering the “Stones of Assisi”, visiting some of the city’s most significant historical, artistic and spiritual sites.
The itinerary includes the Basilica of Saint Francis, a treasure house of art and spirituality, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and decorated with frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue; Piazza del Comune and the Temple of Minerva, the historic heart of Assisi, where the ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva now forms part of a magnificent Baroque church overlooking the lively medieval square; the Rocca Maggiore, an imposing medieval fortress offering panoramic views over the surrounding hills and the Umbrian Valley; and the Cathedral of San Rufino, an ancient Romanesque cathedral, with access to the bell tower for breathtaking views over Assisi.
The tour continues to the Monastery of San Damiano, a symbolic site in the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, surrounded by peaceful olive groves; the Sanctuary of Rivotorto and the Sacro Tugurio, which preserves the first dwelling of Saint Francis and his companions and is considered the cradle of Franciscan brotherhood; and the Monastery of San Masseo, an 11th-century monastic complex where participants will visit the crypt.
Admission to the bell tower of San Rufino and a visit to the crypt of San Masseo are included.
