The tour of Lake Trasimeno is one of the great classics for Umbrian cycling enthusiasts, but it is also a must for those on holiday here. This route starts from the village of Castiglione del Lago, but it can potentially start from any of the towns along the lake.
The roads are not very busy, but from Monte Buono to Castiglione del Lago and then on the short stretch between Riccio and Terontola, you need to be a little careful, as you may encounter large vehicles. If you often use gravel bikes, you can take advantage of the dirt cycle path along the lake.
The route is mostly flat, with only a few bumps or slight climbs. The most challenging section is in Punta Bella, between Borghetto and Tuoro. It is only a few hundred metres long, but with a significant gradient. Once at the top, however, you can admire a wonderful view of the lake.
After passing Passignano, a town on the shores of the lake where another stop is a must, if you have time and your legs allow it, we recommend a short detour to Montecolognola. This is a panoramic village from which you can once again enjoy a view to remember.
